About the Artist

A Sense of Place
Debra Marin has been painting in the great outdoors for the last decade, observing the changing of seasons and the dramatic skies of desert and mountain scenes. Knowing how the natural light falls over form and changes colors through the day helps the painter develop a vision not easily duplicated by other means. Call it what you may, plein air painting, field studies, on-the-spot painting, painting outside is a tool the artist uses to bring nature into the studio for further study. It is always a goal to keep the freshness and authenticity of the sketch while developing a mature, finished studio painting.
"I feel such pure emotions when I am walking in wild lands. Open country opens my eyes to more than just a nice view. I try to understand how natural systems link together, from the most intimate birdsong to a line of snow squalls across the horizon. Animal tracks in the snow, the first spring blossom, migration of birds; all are signals to which I pay attention. My paintings build on a foundation of natural history, as knowledge of nature is what helps us love her."
Ms. Marin has a B.A. in Art from Southern Utah University, and has taken art classes at the University of Utah. She credits workshops with Utah artists Dave Koch, Diane Turner, John Poon and John Hughes for helping her learn practical approaches to landscape painting. They all share the passion for painting which is the hallmark of great teachers.
